Summary

Volvo Cars China is seeking a proactive, business-minded, seasoned commercial lawyer to become part of its Greater China Legal team within Group Legal function, supporting Volvo Cars’ strategic transformation and growing business in China. Our new colleague will provide business-oriented legal support to a wide variety of commercial operations and activities across Greater China, have opportunity to contribute or drive strategic global projects, independently manage legal needs and matters for certain commercial functions.

The Greater China legal team is a group of lawyers with different backgrounds and a dynamic culture. The Shanghai-based legal team primarily supports Volvo Cars’ operation in Greater China region including commercial operation, car manufacturing, R&D development, corporate governance, procurement and logistic activities, real estate transactions, financial matters, merger & acquisition, venture investments, competition law matters and other compliance related matters. It is also Greater China legal team’s responsibility to manage legal disputes of any nature, to provide legal training, and to develop policies, instructions, and guidelines for the Greater China region.

Key Responsibilities

Candidate will be a key member of the Greater China Legal team, particularly supporting the commercial operation and activities of the National Sales Company based in the Sinar Mas Plaza in Shanghai. Our new colleague will be a trusted legal advisor and interface for commercial teams to address their legal needs on a day-to-day basis, to independently manage various legal matters and projects supporting commercial operations and will in this capacity collaborate and interact with legal colleagues in the China team and also with other legal colleagues around the globe.

Key responsibilities include the following:

1) Providing effective, sophisticated, and pragmatic legal advice across a multitude of topics and matters to navigate, resolve, and prevent legal risks and issues in commercial transactions and operations, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements, counseling on commercial matters including for example competition law, marketing, direct-to-consumer matters, handling disputes, and managing external counsel.

2) Proactively monitoring relevant legislative and regulatory developments and sharing within both the legal and business teams as appropriate, supporting business teams in exploring new business models and opportunities in changing legislative and regulatory landscape.

3) Supporting affiliate-related M&A projects, cross-region legal projects, as well as other strategic initiatives and projects.

4) Conducting legal trainings for internal colleagues on various legal topics including competition law, advertisement, internal procedures and policies.

Qualifications

• Master of law (with upper-tier grades) from a reputable Chinese university. Oversea educational background is preferred.

• 10+ years of post-qualification commercial counselling experience in reputable law firms and preferably part of this time at the legal department of multinational companies. Working experience in a global legal team or overseas is strongly preferred.

• PRC Bar qualified is required, overseas law degrees and/or qualification preferred.

• Experience in M&A projects and contentious matters is a plus.

• Pragmatic and business-oriented approach to problem solving but holding legal advice strong and firm; being able to translate legal advice to actions that deliver business value.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a service mindset.

• Good team player with a collaborative thinking; being able to work cross-functionally with good business sense and acumen.

• Positive thinking, self-driven, adaptable, enthusiastic to learn, attentive to details.

• Proven excellent English skills in writing and speaking with experience using English as working language.
