Assistant Mechanical Engineer - Year In Industry

A 13-month industrial work placement as a Mechanical engineer working in analytical instrumentation as part of a product design and development team within a leading global engineering corporation.

Based in Stonehouse, UK
Full time - 37.5 hours per week
Start date - Mon 1st July 2024
13-month placement ending - 25th July 2025
25 days paid holiday + UK bank holidays.
Salary - £24,000 per annum

We are looking for a year in industry student to join our development team in Stonehouse, for a 13-month placement.
During the placement you will be part of a development team and help with the ongoing engineering work, in addition to this you will be assigned an individual project to be completed over the year with us. As part of your role, we also ask the year in industry placement students to be STEM Ambassadors for the company, lead on STEM activities and represent ABB at STEM events throughout the year. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK, have a UK passport or hold the appropriate Work / Student Visa to allow work placements. ABB is unable to sponsor Visa applications for the year in industry roles. The Year in industry role is for students at UK universities taking a year in industry as part of a recognized qualification. Not open to graduates or postgraduates.
Your responsibilities
• Design, develop and test mechanical parts/ prototypes to meet required specification.
• Working in multi-discipline product design and development team of electronics, embedded software and mechanical engineers.
• Proposing solutions to address requests for product design changes, corrections or additional features.
• Implementing design changes in 3D models, technical drawings and related design documentation.
• Working to design procedures and processes.
• Working closely with other business functions (Industrial Engineering, Procurement, Quality Assurance, etc) to ensure changes are introduced into production.
• Adhering to corporate values and standards including health and safety, ethics and integrity.
• Collaborating with other departments, eg product management supply chain, manufacturing, production engineering, quality assurance.
• Planning and prioritising own tasks and reviewing progress against the objectives and project plans of a wider project team.
• Finding solutions to routine and non-routine problems and contributing to development of solutions to complex problems.
• Critically evaluating own activities and keeping detailed accurate records.

Your background
• Ongoing undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering and able to spend 13 months in industrial employment - essential
• Knowledge of CAD like Solidworks (preferred), Inventor, etc - essential
• Practical experience of building/ assembling parts, hands on approach - essential
• Basic knowledge of MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Word - essential
• Basic knowledge of Electronics - desirable
• Basic knowledge of additive manufacturing (3D printing) - desirable
• Basic knowledge of any PLM system like windchill, solidworks PDM, etc - desirable
