Overview

The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. CIT helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community.

The Computing and Information Technology Division (CITD) owns PNNL’s technical IT/OT strategy and provides the tools, data, devices, and infrastructure that PNNLers use to do their jobs every day. We partner with the research divisions to drive innovation and mission enablement while pushing the latest commercial offerings to creatively solve new problems in novel ways. We lead with design to drive simplicity and ease of use, engineering the systems that run the business, and innovating to transform our sponsor's business.

The Digital Platforms division of (CITD) works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. The team helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community. Digital Platforms is combining profound domain expertise and creative integration of advanced hardware and software to deliver computational solutions that address complex data and analytic challenges. Our strengths are integrated across the data analytics lifecycle, from data acquisition & management, to analysis and decision support.

Responsibilities

As a National Laboratory, we offer a unique blend of opportunities for the exceptional candidate. The Software Engineer - AI Services position focus encompasses the implementation and utilization of a procured Generative AI Platform. Your work will include maintaining and operating the platform, partnering with clients to define, build and deliver innovative solutions to complex business and scientific problems; working with effective teams from multiple disciplines; and recommending and implementing standards and best practices. As a member of a stable team, you are expected to develop knowledge of the goals of projects or clients you are supporting – and maintain a customer service focus commensurate with this position.

Your key responsibilities and accountabilities would include:
• Drive the implementation and use of cutting-edge solutions leveraging procured Generative AI Platform
• Develop workflows and integrations, based on customers’ requirements, to deliver upon AI Chat solutions.
• Stay current with AI Platform roadmap, and upcoming upgrades, to inform stakeholders on offerings and updates.
• Be technical lead on AI Platform implementation, as well as triage and support resolution of technical issues reported.
• Work collaboratively as part of an agile development team that delivers incremental features to a wide range of products.
• Collaborate effectively on diverse teams (e.g., Portfolio / Project managers, domain experts, users, and software engineering team) to design and deploy innovative solutions across the enterprise.
• Utilize software engineering best practices through the entire software development lifecycle and recommend changes in development, maintenance, and system standards.
• Enhance personal technical and professional skills through active mentoring and training.
• Assimilate knowledge quickly in a variety of domains.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
• BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
• MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
• PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in leveraging Generative AI capabilities.
• Experience with Azure OpenAI
• Experience developing APIs and RESTful Web Services
• Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript
• Experience configuring cloud services with Azure, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud
• Knowledge of Search Engine configuration such as Elastic Search and/or Azure Cognitive Search
• Knowledge of Large Language Models
• Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence security principles.
• Knowledge in machine learning and the finetuning of models.
• Exceptional communicator with both technical and nontechnical audiences
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically to deliver innovative solutions.
• Deliver results with highest level of professionalism and integrity.
